Jakarta Animal Aid Network (JAAN) and Earth Island Institute (EII) invite you to the press conference and screening of the Oscar winning film ‘The Cove’. Ric O’Barry, the protagonist of the film, will present the launching of a new program to protect Dolphins in Indonesia.

O’Barry was first recognized in the 1960’s as the dolphin trainer for the TV show ‘Flipper’. After Flipper died due to the stress of captivity O’Barry made a radical transition from training dolphins to be an advocate for dolphin freedom and has successfully rehabilitated and released captive dolphins back into the wild in countries all over the world.

‘The Cove’ movie has won more awards than any other documentary in history, including the Academy Award and was featured on the Oprah Winfrey show where O’Barry was named one of the three men Oprah Winfrey admires most.

The wild dolphin population is being threatened in Indonesian waters due to the up and coming industry of ‘swimming with dolphins programs’ and cruel traveling circus’ – where dolphins are transported in old trucks. Indonesia is the last country in the world where dolphins are used in traveling circus shows.

In the Java Sea, the population of dolphins has been reduced drastically, due to the captive industry.

JAAN and the Indonesian government will collaborate to rehabilitate dolphins in the area.

Close to 200 tails were wagging furiously throughout the morning of Feb. 13, when the second annual PawDay brought together Jakarta’s dogs and their owners for a day out in Taman Langsat in Kebayoran Baru.

Coinciding with Valentine’s Day, which fell the day after, the fundraiser celebrated a love for pets, and attracted an estimated 380 people and their companion animals who leisurely walked the 1.2 kilometer paved route around the park, before gathering in the tent area, set up in the tennis courts, for games and prizes.

Event organizer and project leader Susan Mallia said Jakarta Animal Aid Network’s (JAAN) team of organizers and volunteers were “ecstatic” over the high totals, with more than double the amount of people and dogs taking part from last year.

“People cannot wait for us to host another dog event. They loved the day out especially as their canine companions were the main focus,” she said.

Pampered pooches of all shapes and sizes, some done up in bows and some sporting doggie-tees, mingled on leashes with each other peacefully while their owners, sharing a canine common ground, struck up conversations with one another.

One owner, worried that her small dog would misbehave around so many larger breeds, was relieved at how social the atmosphere was for them and the positive effect it had on his behavior, calling PawDay a “Woodstock for animals”.

The fundraiser also attracted non-pet owners. One reason Jakarta resident Sarah Skelton said she attended was that she misses having contact with dogs from her native England.

“It was so well-organized, and I couldn’t believe how many different types of dogs there are here,” said Skelton. She added it was also a good opportunity to get out and see Taman Langsat for the first time.

“It would be nice to have these events move around the city so that we could get to see the other different pockets of Jakarta.”

New features added to this year’s fundraiser included musical mutts, a game played like musical chairs in which dogs were eliminated if they weren’t standing on a mat when the music stopped.

Before the game, a number of participants took part in the puppy Picasso painting competition, in which owners dipped their pet’s paws into pans of paint and then pressed them on a large sheet of paper in a colorful design.

All artwork was judged and owners of the winning artists were awarded prizes. A talent show rounded off the events, with owners bringing their dogs on stage to have them perform a trick or two.

Event organizer Mary Lee Stenson, who was honored at the fundraiser as the organization’s volunteer of the year, had come up with the ideas for the dog competitions and emceed all the activities.

“She even made the edible dog paint herself,” Mallia added.

“PawDay raised people’s awareness immensely as well as provided much-needed funds for JAAN’s many animal welfare programs,” said Mallia, who had spent the last six months organizing and preparing for this year’s dog walk.

“All the hard work and effort was worth it and I find great comfort in knowing JAAN now has funds to help cover their massive monthly expenses for helping so many animals in Jakarta,” said Mallia, who is originally from South Africa.

Buoyed by the event’s results, Mallia said organizers would strive to make next year’s PawDay bigger and better.

“We now know a large part of the community love their dogs, support our organization and want to support us in the future,” she said, adding that most participants commented that they wanted another dog event this year and that their feedback would be considered.

Although organizers called Taman Langsat a great venue for holding the event, they would explore other options that could accommodate a higher turnout for next year. An avid animal lover, Mallia and her husband own four dogs, of which three were adopted from a rescue shelter in Hong Kong over the four years they lived in the city before they move to Jakarta last year.

“It was a great day out for meeting new friends and meeting people with similar passions. Most of all, PawDay offered dogs and dog owners an enjoyable, social, fun day out,” she said.

We all love going out with our friends. But when was the last time we went out with our four legged friends?

In November 2009, Jakarta Animal Aid Network (JAAN) held its first ever PawDay dog walk.

Dog owners and lovers were invited to take their dogs out for a fun day at the park while supporting JAAN’s drive to raise public awareness of animal welfare in Indonesia and to raise much needed funds.

From early morning the dogs and their owners began arriving at Taman Langsat, Kebayoran Baru, Jakarta to take part in PawDay.

Over 100 dogs (a number we hope to double at our next walk) joined the event, along with their very proud owners.

Everyone was spilt into groups and guided along the walk by JAAN volunteers.

Over the short distance track, the dogs took a leisurely stroll while sniffing about and meeting new friends.

Once every one had completed the walk, they all gathered at the bazaar area. Here a large tent providing shade, and housing 12 stalls, stood waiting.

There were many products on sale for the dogs – from dog food, supplements and snacks, to dog clothes and photography services.

Of course, there were also a couple of stalls selling food and drinks of the human variety.

All three JAAN founders, Karin Franken, Femke den Haas and Natalie Stewart, were on hand to discuss animal care and to tell everyone about the charity.

Karin shared tips on walking and caring for dogs and discussed some of the amazing success stories that JAAN has had over the past three years.

Natalie talked about JAAN and all its activities to help rescue and rehabilitate wild and domestic animals.

She encouraged everyone to become JAAN members and volunteers and to spread the word amongst family and friends. On the day, JAAN brought along seven dogs who were waiting for adoption.

It was truly great that one of those dogs found a new family on PawDay.

Yet another success story for JAAN.

JAAN was fortunate to have a resident vet, Dr Ooy, join them to share her knowledge and tips on how to take care of dogs’ health and their well being.

There was also a dog trainer, Senno, who demonstrated tips on training dogs to do simple tricks. Some of the owners were very proud to show off their dogs’ skills and abilities at mastering these tricks in no time.

There were also doggie games and a small raffle that added more fun to the day.

It was a great day out and a huge success for JAAN in raising awareness and recruiting new supporters and members.

This is why JAAN endeavours to make PawDay an annual fundraising event, a ‘must do’ for every dog lover in Jakarta.

The next JAAN PawDay Walk will be held on 13th February 2011.

As the walk will take place during the month of love, the theme this year is ‘Love Your Dog’.

It will again be held in Taman Langsat, Kebayoran Baru.

This year there will be many attractions such as doggie competitions and games as well as numerous food stalls and other vendors.

Also a fabulous Raffle with some super-amazing prizes to be won, from a LG Flat Panel TV, a BlackBerry and dog grooming vouchers to mention just a few.

Like last year, PawDay is a great opportunity for JAAN volunteers to meet many of the dogs that have been adopted from JAAN in the past, and to say thank you to all its supporters.

The PawDay Walk is an event for everyone, especially the dogs of Jakarta.

But it’s also important to JAAN for raising much needed funds to keep it going in rescuing, rehabilitating and re-homing dogs, cats and other wildlife.
