We Have A LOT OF DOGS!

People think that JAAN just has Kampung (Mixed Breed) dogs.

But, JAAN would like people to know that we have many purebreds, pedigrees in addition to Kampung dogs in Foster Care that are waiting for an adoptive home.

Why is that?

The Pedigrees and Purebreds were once bought at a high price at a breeder or pet shop because owning a purebred pet has become very “fashionable” and many people like to brag about the cute and expensive pedigree puppy they have just purchased.

Often they don’t realize the consequences of having a pet and when it barks because of being caged 24/7, or it pee’s on the carpet, or it chews on an expensive shoe that was on the floor, or just grows bigger and is not so cute anymore, or the novelty wears off, these same “designer pets” end up being neglected and become unwanted.

Hence, JAAN gets the phone calls and e-mails daily from people wanting us to take their Alaskan Husky, Golden Retriever, Shitzu, Chihuahua, German Shepard, etc.

with a variety of reasons and excuses. Education regarding responsible pet ownership is a must and priority for JAAN.

If you adopt the same purebred dog from JAAN instead of from a breeder, not only are you missing out on an excellent opportunity to feel good about where you got your pedigree dog, but you are making room in JAAN’s Foster Care Network for one more dog to take its spot.

JAAN wishes that Breeders and Petshop owners that sell pedigree dogs would follow strict International Breeding practices and standards that maximize the health and DNA lineage of the breed and that the animals would be taken care of properly.

JAAN has seen received many animals that have been over-bred and in poor health due to lack of sanitation, lack of nutritious food, and that have been pumped with hormones to the point of developing cervical and vaginal cancers.

This kind of outcome from breeders is not responsible nor professional.

There are also cases of people finding out that their pet’s “papers” have been falsified.

That is extremely easy to do here.

JAAN was called to rescue 45 animals from a breeder who went out of business.

When JAAN arrived at his abandoned home where the animals were kept in cages, 40 pedigree dogs had already died from starvation and thirst.

JAAN was only able to save the last 5 that were strong enough to survive.

If this breeder cared about the animals he was breeding, he would’ve found them homes and not let them all die.

Not all breeders are irresponsible, but not all are responsible either.

• Puppies sold should be AT LEAST 8 WEEKS old.  Not younger.  They should not be taken from their mother until they are 8 WEEKS OLD.  A puppy needs to drink milk with immunities from its mother and be socialized properly for the first 8 weeks of its life.  If a breeder shows you a puppy younger than 8 weeks, though it might be incredibly cute, it may have behavior issues and may have health issues.

• Ask when/if the puppy was vaccinated.  If it received its first vaccination at age 3-4 weeks, this is far too early and will actually put their health at risk. With an already low immune system and on top of that being vaccinated, the puppy is at risk of catching al kinds of viruses: parvo, distemper, panleukopenia, calici etc. These viruses often result in death at a young age.

• Ask to see the Mother and Father dogs.  A Professional Breeder will be proud to show you their happy parents, running free or in a large area, that is clean, has access to fresh water and good food, exercise, outdoor garden, etc.  If they say they can’t show you them, it may be because they are caged 24/7 and at some places they have never even seen daylight. They are very isolated and rarely interact with humans or other animals.  Dogs are social animals and need companionship. These animals lead a sad, lonely and frustrating existence . They suffer immensely and their puppies are usually in poor health as well.

• Does the breeder seem to be interested too much in making money?  Does he have a relationship with a reliable and Professional Veterinarian?  To keep the costs as low as possible, some breeders feed their dogs the lowest quality food and receive no vet care. They inject their dogs themselves with hormones to increase reproduction.  These dogs are in bad health and suffer.

• Ask about Paperwork.  Get educated on the facts of the breed you are looking for on the internet.  Remember, anyone can produce “papers” for a dog, just like anyone can produce a letter of reference for work here in Jakarta.  Certificates or any paperwork may have no value and hence, genetic disorders and health issue may materialize later.

• Ask the vet what happens when their dogs are not producing anymore?  Some are just simply thrown on the streets, some are put down.  Those who are thrown on the streets (and believe us, that happens!), will often die in a short time since they have no survival skills and they are already in poor health.

If you don’t feel comfortable about a breeder or pet shop, don’t support them.  If you think you are “rescuing” a puppy from an irresponsible breeder, you are also giving money to the breeder to continue his non-professional and cruel business practice.  It doesn’t stop unless they don’t make a profit anymore.  One puppy is sold, and 2 more are produced with its proceeds.

Adopting an animal and giving it a second chance is the best thing you could do, but if you rather buy a pedigree puppy, please do your homework first.  ONLY buy from a responsible breeder with high standards!  Contact JAAN at jaan_adopt@yahoo.com.  We can recommend the pedigree dogs we have in our Foster Care Network and also discuss professional breeders with you.

It can teach children many lessons for life: responsibility, commitment, and love.

That is, of course, if children are guided properly by their parents and if parents are role modeling how to be a responsible pet owner.

Parents need to know and demonstrate responsible Pet Ownership so their children will learn from them.

Here are some points to consider when you are thinking of getting a pet for your child:

1. If you decide to get a pet it should be the whole family’s responsibility, not only your child’s. You cannot expect a child to be fully responsible for another living creature since he/she is also not able to care for him or her self yet either.
2. Do some research first to find out what type of animal fits your family and life-style best.  There are many websites available that help match a pet to families.  If you spend little time at home, maybe a dog won’t be the best pet for you since they require more interactivity with humans than a smaller animal such as a cat or a rabbit.  If you do decide you want to have a dog, check out personalities first. If you are an active family that likes to walk and do outdoor activities, a high energy level dog will suit your family. If you don’t lead such an active life, a smaller dog with a calm personality might suit you better.
3. Are you ready to make a life time commitment to the animal you are going to bring into your family? Remember, you want to teach your child about responsibilities and commitment which your child will bring with him or her for the rest of their lives. If you give up on your pet for whatever reason you are basically telling your child that giving up on animals (and even people!) is ok if things are not going smoothly. This is obviously not a positive message you want to teach your child.
4. Be a “hands on” pet owner. It’s you and your family who want to own a pet, so make sure you and your family are the main caretakers and not your staff. By being a “hands on” pet owner you are bonding with your pet and it’s trusting you for its care.
5. Make sure you guide your children when they are still young and teach them how to be gentle towards animals. Animals are NOT toys! It’s the parents responsibility to make sure that both your child and the animal are safe at all times. Rough behavior should not be allowed.  No tail pulling, poking, teasing, throwing, kicking or hitting.  Those behaviors are not allowed in schools and shouldn’t be allowed at home.

Having a pet will teach your children to be gentle, loving, committed and responsible human beings !

Anjing pada dasarnya adalah satwa sosial yang berinteraksi dengan manusia dan binatang lainnya. Anjing yang terus dirantai/kandang di satu tempat selama berjam-jam, berhari-hari, berbulan-bulan bahkan bertahun-tahun akan menderita kerusakan psikologis yang serius.

Seekor anjing yang ramah dan jinak akan menjadi neurotik, tidak bahagia, cemas, dan seringkali agresif apabila dia dirantai atau di kandangi terus-menerus.

Anjing dapat hidup hanya dengan makan dan minum, tetapi untuk menjadi bahagia dan sehat, anjingpun butuh latihan, cinta dan perhatian dari pemiliknya.

Adalah suatu hukuman yang paling buruk bagi anjing tersebut apabila dia dirantai atau di kandang secara permanent, karena anjing adalah satwa sosial.

Mengisolasi anjing, tidak memberinya kesempatan untuk berinteraksi dan bergerak secara bebas adalah suatu kejahatan.

Bayangkanlah jika anda dirantai atau dikandangi bertahun-tahun, tidak ada seorangpun yang datang untuk bermain dengan anda  dan kebebasan anda terampas.

Anda ingin bermain, berlari, atau merenggangkan kaki, tetapi yang dapat   dilakukan hanya maju dan mundur…. dan akhirnya anda akan berhenti, diam, dan pasrah, menyerah, menunggu belas kasihan.

Manusia begitu banyak cara untuk menghibur dirinya sendiri : menonton film, main video games, berbelanja, menonton televisi……!!

Anjing anda hanya memiliki ANDA!!!.

Anjing anda sangat tergantung pada anda untuk membuat hidupnya baik atau buruk.

NASIBNYA ADA DITANGAN ANDA!
