Is it unnatural and cruel to sterilize my pet ?
Sterilization is a high priority at JAAN. We have sterilization programs running for stray dogs and cats and sterilization is compulsory for our adoption program. We frequently get a lot of criticism from people who would like to adopt from us, but after they find out that sterilization is part of “the deal” they get upset.
We always do our best explaining why sterilization is so important for us and the animals and that, besides it benefits the dog/cat medically and can prevent many unwanted medical conditions such as cancer, it really is the most responsible thing to do considering there are countless of unwanted and neglected animals ( big, small, local and pedigree ! ) here in Indonesia.
Despite our efforts, we are often called cruel and sometimes people even say that we are not true animal lovers. We understand that these statements come from people who are unaware of the situation we are dealing with and the countless of animals that are in desperate need of a home, unaware of all the intense suffering due to the overpopulation of pets and strays, unaware of animal welfare in general and the suffering that is going on, unaware what the rest of the world is doing and unaware that nowadays there is not much left of the animals “natural behavior” due to human beings “behavior”.
Although we at JAAN agree to let your dog live as “natural” as possible and to meet all the needs of every particular breed, we strongly believe that uncontrolled breeding is not part of that.
After the dog was domesticated and up to this day where people intentional cross-breed,to create the so called “designer dogs”, dogs and cats have really been stripped of almost most of their natural behaviors over the years. Also irresponsible pet ownership, too much breeding, suffering, neglect, having a pet for the wrong reasons, caging, isolation etc contribute to the “unnatural” situations pets find themselves in nowadays.
So is sterilizing your pet unnatural ?
If you find the procedure unnatural what about caging your dog 24/7 ?
what about isolating your dog ?
what about all these animals that suffer because of the irresponsibility of humans ?
What is so natural about all that?
What do you actually know about pets and there natural behavior?
Do you know that they act based on their instincts?
Do you actually think that they dream or fantasize about raising their family and having sex with each other?
Our advice for people who find sterilization cruel is : WAKE UP AND LOOK AROUND YOU!
We deal with people not wanting their pet anymore, abuse there pet, cage there pet or just being overall irresponsible DAILY.
How can you provide a good life for your pet and be a responsible pet owner ?
Consider the following things before you are even thinking of getting a pet :
- Get a pet because you really want to , not because it is a trend or status symbol.
- Choose a pet that fits your environment and lifestyle.
- Be committed. A pet is not a piece of furniture that you can get rid of ones you are bored or when it doesn’t fit your lifestyle or situation anymore. Pets are for life!
- Dogs are pack animals, which means that they are social and sociable by nature. They need daily interaction, love , care and exercise. Are you able to provide all that after a long day at the office?
- Dont cage or tie your pet! Would you like to be stuck in a cage for most of the day or your whole life?? It is a big punishment for your pet to be caged or tied! If your situation does not allow you to let your dog/cat roam around freely for whatever reason or if you are afraid your garden gets ruined, simply don’t get a pet! Does that mean that you should let your pet be free in your garden and outside your gate? Inside your garden yes, outside the gate NO. Besides the fact that it is dangerous to let your pet out unattended, it is also not fair towards your neighbors.
- There are countless of unwanted animals desperate for a new home. This is due to over breeding, uncontrolled breeding, irrresponsible pet ownership. Please don’t buy, but ADOPT! Organizations like JAAN have big, small, young, old, local and pedigree dogs and cats that are in need of a good home.
- Sterilize your pet!, It is easy to find homes for puppies, but it is very difficult to find GOOD & RESPONSIBLE homes! Help by preventing unwanted dogs and cats, neglected pets and strays and the suffering of animals in general by sterilizing your pet!
JAAN is overwhelmed with phone calls and e-mails every single day regarding animals in need. It is simply too much to handle for us and many animals can not be helped.
The animal welfare situation here in Indonesia is at an extremely low level which is often caused my humans and there irresponsible and selfish behavior.
There is nothing “natural” about this, yet you find sterilization “unnatural”?
This is what happens if there are TOO many unwanted animals and not enough good and responsible homes :
Neglected German Shepard dumped by irresponsible owners after they lost interest
Mixed poodles abandoned in empty house by previous owners. These poor dogs were only fed occasionally (3x weekly) for many, many months
Group of stray animals breeding uncontrolled. A group of animal lovers sterilized all the adult dogs and tried re-homing the pups. Unfortunately there was a parvo outbreak and most of the pups died.
This sweet pitbull and shitzu were 5 of the survivors of an irresponsible petshop/breeder. Unfortunately the 40 other dogs died.
Sweet golden that lived in a cage the size of her own body for many months and 24/7
