Many external pressures are having an effect on orangutan conservation. Illegal logging, agriculture development as rainforests are converted in to palmoil plantations and the wildlife trade are the main threats towards the survival of orangutans. In order to capture a baby, the mother often falls victim to the greed of the poachers. Although officially forbidden, these babies will end up kept as pet under extreme poor conditions. This is what happening big scale in Kalimantan at the moment. Palmoil plantations are at fast rate destroying the last habitat of the orangutan leading to many orphan orangutans illegally kept in captivity. JAAN joined a joint-rescue operation with Center for Orangutan Protection, Orangutan Outreach and JAAN in the end of May in West Kalimantan (Sintang). At present the JAAN team assist to care 24/7 for the rescued orangutans at the Sintang Orangutan Center, a new initiative, due to the high need for a rescue center for orangutans in this area.

On the picture you see Pongki, one of the rescued orphans that is safe and sound at the center.

Pungki arrived very weak and lethargic but gained much strength and now, two weeks after his arrival, climbs up high in the trees and enjoys most playing with one of his buddies, Mimi and Momo.

She managed to escape once, after she had hit the chain for days in a row with a heavy brick and the chain broke, rewarding her patience.

But she was soon recaptured by her owner and chained again and put in cage, spending her life in loneliness and boredom.

Surely much money is needed to care for the rescued orangutans and plan further rescue operations! Please donate!
