Puri Open Day Report

On Sunday 30th of May 2010, JAAN held Puri Farm Open Day at Puri. This event was held to allow the public to learn more about animal welfare and teach younger children proper care of companion animals.

Puri farm is a plot of land loaned to JAAN, on which JAAN has built stables for Andong horses (a traditional carriage in Jakarta). It also houses some cats and dogs that JAAN has rescued from the streets. JAAN provided a shuttle service to and from the nearby Hypermart as there was no parking available at the farm itself.

Visitors coming to the event were taken for a tour by staff and volunteers. The small tour around the area showed the stables and introduced visitors to the two horses rescued by JAAN.

Lucky and Rangga had lived their lives as carriage horses with minimum care until nearly dead, they were rescued by JAAN.

Now they don’t have to work hard as carriage horses anymore, spending their days grazing and running around in the paddock instead.

Visitors could brush Lucky and put the harness and saddle on him before taking a short ride around the paddock or play with Rangga.

On the other side of the stable, visitors could play with JAAN’s cats and dogs. We had many dogs available for adoption at Puri that day including Brownie, Chai, Dan, Kylie, Justin, Johnny, Nim, Popeye, and 4 other puppies. We also had friendly kittens and cats, ready to play and looking for new homes. Stray animals are a major animal welfare issue in Jakarta, JAAN is promoting adoption instead of buying or breeding cats and dogs to help overcome this problem.

Vendor stalls were also available, for hungry visitors, IVS (Indonesian Vegatarian Society) opened a booth selling vegetarian burgers, satay and fried mushroom. For those who like to shop, we had flea market, selling second hand books and soft toys and cold drinks. We also had some JAAN merchandise such as T-shirts for sale.

Local children from around Puri Farm were very welcome to come to our event. The group had fun playing with the animals, joining in games and swimming in the pond.

The event finished at 2 PM, and the shuttle sent the last of the visitors back to their cars at Hypermart. Thank you for your participation and for those of you who could not come to this event, please stay tuned for the next JAAN Open Day at Puri Farm.
